“Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of Life.”
Newness of Life was developed by Phillip Saxton for the purpose of teaching people the fundamentals of the Christian life. As Mr. Saxton says; “The first and most important thing for Christians to accomplish is to help bring people into the family of God, the second is to provide them with instruction that leads to spiritual maturity.”
Jesus taught two great commandments. In Matthew 22:36-39, He said: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? And He said to Him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus later defined ‘neighbor’ when he told the story of The Good Samaritan. Here we learned that our neighbor includes people who are not like us, may live in a different area, may be of a different race or sex, may not look like us at all, but to be identified as a follower of Jesus you show love and compassion to all people.
Paul, later in Galatians 5:22-23, taught us about the fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” In these two pieces of scripture we learn what being a Christian entails. It also provides us with an excellent measuring stick to measure the statements and actions of others, leading us to not believe but to know when people do not measure up to these teachings, they are either not Christians or they are such babes in Christ and do not know better.
As individuals, we should desire to build our relationship with God. We should commune with Him, pray with Him, bury his teaching in our hearts and spend the rest of our lives growing and maturing…becoming loving children of God.
